Food makes us feel closer to people and places that we miss. I know missionaries and expats that are really missing the states right now knowing that Thanksgiving is right around the corner. Being from the United States, there is something within us that craves all the dishes of Thanksgiving and the people with whom we normally share our meal.

We are in the states this year and looking forward to Thanksgiving with family here, yet we dealt with a similar issue on my daughter's 9th birthday (her first birthday to celebrate back in the US). What was I to do as she missed all her friends and church family in Bolivia? What do you do when you are miles away from where you want to be and it’s your child’s first birthday without her normal crowd? There were particular people who had been to every birthday since she was born up until this one.

So, I decided to make a special treat from Bolivia and turned a frown into a smile on my daughter's birthday. I made tawa tawas. The name means four four in Quechua and they are basically fried little puffed breads with powdered sugar on top. Everyone in our small group that night seemed to have a recipe similar to what I was making. Some called them dough balls. Others were reminded of their favorite sopapilla. Can’t go wrong with a little Crisco and flour ;) Mine didn’t exactly turn out puffy and hollow in the middle. Mission accomplished. Jubilee had something from Bolivia, everyone in our small group enjoyed them, and bonus: all my children thanked me for making something from Bolivia.

Is there a dish from Thanksgiving past that you would like to make and share with Thanksgiving present?
