In Venezuela and many other places in Latin America, Christmas Eve or Noche Buena is celebrated to a greater degree than Christmas Day. Culturally speaking, there is a lot of Catholic influence and, as such, many celebrate the birth of baby Jesus no matter what the religious background.
On this "Noche Buena" or Christmas Eve, what are you celebrating?
"For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on his shoulders. And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (Isaiah 9:6 NIV)
Yesterday, we had a small family church service at home. We read from Luke 1 and 2, sang several songs, and took the Lord's Supper together. It was the perfect combined celebration of the birth and death of Christ in the same small service.
During our prayer time, we also rejoiced in the fact that in Christ, we could celebrate our connection as family not only by blood, but also through the blood of Christ - a true blessing for which we gave much thanks. As mom put it as we closed, "Like Mary, I too treasure these things in my heart."
